Construction Monitoring Solutions

Activities during construction projects could entail several potential hazards to pipeline infrastructure. PPIC construction monitoring solutions can detect physical contact or movement of a pipeline, which might occur during construction projects. Any contact or movement of pipelines can cause damage which is not immediately apparent. This type of damage would crack the pipeline’s protective mortar which initiates the onset of corrosion and eventually catastrophic failure.

Heavy Construction Loads

Heavy construction equipment and other loads on the surface of the ground could exceed stress levels in the design of surrounding pipelines. These loads could cause sudden complete collapse of a pipeline or small flexing of the pipe which would crack the protective mortar leading to potential catastrophic failure.

Excavation Activities

Excavation activities could also puncture surrounding pipelines causing damage which might not be immediately apparent. Any excavation equipment such as augers or backhoes could impact the exterior surface of the pipeline causing cracks and damage to the protective mortar.

The period between this kind of damage and eventual pipeline rupture may be on the order of years.

Pipeline Acoustic Emission Testing (AET)

Using Acoustic Emission Testing (AET) during construction projects, PPIC uses sensitive hydrophones on pipelines that collect precise acoustic data. The data collected can then be used to identify pipe sections in distress or which have been physically impacted during construction. AET is normally done in search of breaking or broken prestressing wires; however AET is also capable of detecting cracked or cracking concrete in the core of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (PCCP).
