Acoustic Emission Testing



1. What is AET?
AET records the frequency and number of distress related acoustic events that occur along the monitored pipe section over a defined period of time.

2. Why is determining the frequency and number of wire breaks important?
If utilities know the frequency and number of distress-related events in PCP, they can use this information to estimate the rate of infrastructure decay. Armed with this information, utilities can make informed choices as to repair, replace or continue to monitor individual pipes.

3. What is AET capable of?
PPIC's AET system:

  • works in PPCP pipe of all diameters, including small diameter pipe and sewer force mains;
  • installs and operates while the pipeline remains in operation;
  • requires no internal access to the pipeline; and
  • is used under a variety of operating conditions, including steady and unsteady flow conditions.

4. Why is your acoustic system the best?
Pipeline Technologies, acquired by PPIC in 2001, pioneered the application of acoustic monitoring techniques to the nondestructive condition assessment of water pipelines. While there are competitive AET offerings, PPIC's AET system is the only system that

  • operates regardless of any internal obstacles such as internal butterfly valves, elbows, T- junctions or Y-junctions;
  • requires no independent power source. The PPIC system is self-contained and relies on battery or solar power;
  • is easily scaleable. By adding units, anywhere up to 10 miles can be monitored at any one time;
  • can be easily mobilized-providing you with the flexibility to successively monitor different segments of a pipeline;
  • can be installed through valves as small as 314" in diameter;
  • is unobtrusive. Our hardware is stored either inside the manhole or in a nearby security box. Only an antenna and optional solar panel are exposed.
