Remote Field Transformer Coupling (RFTC)
1. What is RFTC?
RFTC is a unique, patented technology that determines the location, distribution and number of wire breaks in PCP pipes.
2. I've heard of other "electromagnetic" pipeline evaluation systems. What's the difference?
PPIC is the acknowledged world leader in the evaluation of prestressed concrete pipes. This leadership is derived from our engineering skill which is based on fifteen years worth of research and development, resources, a commitment to working with our customers to set the standards for pipeline inspection and monitoring, and experience.
Electromagnetic systems are sensitive to all the electromagnetic properties of PCP. They are capable of detecting not only wire breaks, but also the features of a pipeline including: manholes, blow-offs, short pipe lengths, changes in cylinder thickness, cylinder composition, wire pitch, diameter and wraps. While other systems can detect "blips", the application of its extensive experience allows PPIC is able to provide the best available evaluation of a pipeline's condition.
3. Where has the technology been used before?
To date PPIC has:
- inspected over 3,000 kilometres of PCCP;
- examined over 400,000 individual pipes;
- performed over 10,000 calibration scans on pipes ranging in diameter from 16" to 252";
- saved several of our clients in excess of $20-$30 million each in unnecessary capital and maintenance costs.
Our clients believe that PPIC's RFTC technology provides them with the best possible evaluation of their water supply infrastructure. This confidence is demonstrated by:
- the 7,500 pipes that PPIC's customers have repaired or replaced as a result of our inspections;
- the multi-year contracts that PPIC has entered into with many of its clients;
- the fact that several of its clients are using the results of an RFTC inspection as the cornerstone of their capital maintenance budgetary planning.

4. Why is determining the number of wire breaks important?
Under normal operating conditions, PCCP will only fail after a loss of prestress. This loss of prestress is caused by breaks in the wire that encircles the concrete core. PPIC's RFTC system is the best available technology to determine how many wires are broken in each pipe in your system.
