PPIC Releases Transient Pressure Monitoring System

Januray 2007

Overview

Transient pressures, also known as “surge” or “water hammer” events, are the result of a sudden change in velocity in the liquid within a pipeline.

Transient pressures exceeding the structural strength of the pipeline will cause damage in the form of rupture or, as is more frequently the case, in the form of latent damage that results in failure at a later date.

TP1 Transient Pressure Remote Monitoring will help to minimize the transient pressures that occur with operating valves, uncontrolled pump start stops, and air valve slams to name a few.

Operation

  • TP-1 is portable and easy to operate and install.
  • Pressure sensors can operate at any range of pressures, including negative pressures.
  • TP-1 communicates with user via all standard wireless and network protocols.
  • TP-1 System includes analysis software and the data can be exported directly to spreadsheets for analysis.
  • Unit features user programmable date, recording interval, transient detection settings and site name.
  • Real-time readout of current data.

Transient Pressure Remote Monitoring Components

Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)
A PocketPC PDA is the primary device for the user interaction. A laptop with a WiFi card can also be used. (Any desktop or laptop on a wired LAN can also be used, if the Controller is connected to the LAN.)

Controller
The Controller processes all of the input signals, and performs all of the logic in the system. It also stores all of the historical data until it is retrieved using the PDA.

Communications
WiFi is the primary communications mechanism. (A wired LAN can also be used.)

Sensors
Depending on the operating mode, 1 or 2 pressure sensors are used to measure the pressure in the pipe.

Data Analysis Programs
PC programs that retrieve the stored data files from the PDA, and convert and display the data. The data is also stored in a database for analysis by other programs.
